Checklist for delegates preparing to attend Boys State...
Be sure to bring:
-Pillow and linens for a twin-size bed
-Three or four bath towels
The following items are not mandatory, but should give you a general idea of what you may need:
-Alarm clock or clock/radio
- bag for dirty laundry
-Ball cap
-Umbrella/rain gear
-Sunglasses/sunscreen/chapstick
-Camera
* You’ll be wearing the Official Boys State shirts at all times (except activity time), so there is no need to bring lots of other shirts. The weather is usually very warm and delegates are welcome to wear shorts the entire week.
* On the first day of Boys State, delegates will chose one activity in which they want to participate the entire week. Activity time will be from 2:30pm-5:00pm, Monday-Thursday, and you must participate in the same activity each day. The options include softball, basketball, volleyball, soccer, band, choral, scholars bowl, and newspaper staff. During free time, you can workout at the fitness center, swim, play racquetball, or just socialize and relax. Be sure to bring any of your personal equipment required for the activity you chose (ex. musical instrument for band, glove for softball, etc.). Also remember to bring loose fitting clothes appropriate for the activity (ex. shorts and T-shirts for sports).
* Be sure to bring plenty of change! All of your meals are covered, so you won’t need more than $20-$25 for snacks and miscellaneous expenses. Sometimes, locating change for vending machines can be a challenge and a waste of your time. You would be wise to bring some crisp $1 bills and maybe a roll of quarters.
* Delegates will not be allowed to leave the university campus during Boys State. However, if you forget or need something, please tell your counselor immediately so that he can assist you as needed.
* Delegates will be allowed to have cell phones, but will be asked to silence them during certain sessions.
TIP: Get to the University of Alabama and check-in as soon as possible on Sunday, May 30th. You’ll be glad you did.
